The Universidad Industrial de Santander (UIS) will officially open the doors of its new campus in Málaga this Friday, May 15. The modern university complex was designed to expand access to public higher education and strengthen regional development in northeastern Colombia.
The inauguration of this new infrastructure will begin at 1:00 p.m. and will mark the official opening of modules 1, 2, 3, 4, and 6 of the university complex, considered one of the most ambitious educational projects recently developed in the department of Santander.
President of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, will attend the official opening ceremony alongside representatives from the Ministry of National Education, regional authorities, and university leaders, in an event symbolizing the strengthening of public education in northeastern Colombia.
With an investment of more than COP 105 billion in physical infrastructure and a total area of 23,989 square meters, the new UIS Málaga campus represents a commitment to the future of thousands of young people from Santander, Norte de Santander, and Boyacá, who will now have access to new spaces for academic training, research, innovation, and student well-being.
Construction on the project began on December 4, 2023, and the completion of modules 5 and 7 is scheduled for June 30, 2026.
The new campus is the result of coordinated efforts between the national government, the department, and the Industrial University of Santander to create greater educational opportunities and promote social transformation through knowledge.
The campus will feature auditoriums, a library, computer labs, classrooms, specialized laboratories, cafeterias, administrative offices, cultural spaces, and student wellness facilities distributed across seven architectural modules.
Designed by architect Lorenzo Castro, the campus incorporates locally sourced travertine marble, large metallic structures integrated into the surrounding landscape, and an innovative “concrete shell” system developed in Switzerland and implemented for the first time in Colombia through this project.
With this new campus, UIS reaffirms its commitment to academic excellence, socially impactful research, technological innovation, and territorial transformation through public education.
