At just 17 years old, Laura Melisa Traslaviña Mateus has achieved what many might consider impossible: scoring 475 out of 500 on Colombia’s Saber 11 national exam, with a perfect score (100/100) in key areas such as Mathematics, Social and Citizenship Education, English, and Natural Sciences. It’s an extraordinary accomplishment that speaks volumes about her discipline, perseverance, and a powerful calling: to become a doctor trained at the Universidad Industrial de Santander (UIS).
A graduate of Colegio Universitario in the town of Vélez, Santander, Laura didn’t always have this outcome. In her first attempt at the ICFES, she scored 384 — a good result for many, but not enough for her greatest dream: to study Medicine at UIS. Rather than give up, she chose to push further.
“I was really scared, full of anxiety… but I never gave up. I always wanted to fight for my dreams,” she says, her voice still trembling with emotion as she recalls the journey.
Despite doubts, Laura held onto her determination. With dedication, discipline, and the support of her family, she faced the challenge once more—and surpassed every expectation.
“I cried tears of joy when I saw the result. It was a moment of pure happiness. I knew how hard I had worked, and that day I knew it had all been worth it.”
Today, her greatest ambition feels closer than ever.
“I want to study Medicine at UIS. I know I can become a great doctor here, thanks to the outstanding professors, the facilities, and the high standards the university holds nationally and internationally,” she affirms with confidence.
To Laura, the UIS represents more than an academic institution—it’s where her dreams gain direction, purpose, and meaning.

A Proud Family, a University That Feels Like Home
Behind Laura’s success is also a story of unwavering support. Her parents, Henry Traslaviña and Alexandra Mateus, proudly celebrate their daughter’s achievement.
“She’s brought us such joy. This is the result of her dedication, her faith, her persistence,” says her father.
“She always knew she wanted to be at UIS, and as parents, we’ve always supported her. It’s a university we feel connected to because we already have another child studying there.”
With one son currently in his eighth semester at UIS in Bucaramanga, the Traslaviña Mateus family has entrusted their children’s future to the university—confident in its quality and prestige.
“UIS has grown so much—its new facilities, its academic level… We’re proud that our children can study there. It’s one of the best universities in Colombia and in Latin America,” her mother says with emotion.
