Under the leadership of the Governor of Santander, Major General (R) Juvenal Diaz Mateus, and the first lady, Victoria Casallas, the official delivery of the “Roadmap for the Transformation of Santander’s Food Systems” took place. This important event had the active participation of representatives from the public, private, academic and civil society sectors.
The School of Nutrition and Dietetics of the Universidad Industrial de Santander (UIS) participated in the award ceremony, reaffirming its commitment to the development of sustainable, healthy and equitable food systems. Its presence underscores the key role of academic and scientific knowledge in the formulation of public policies aimed at the nutritional well-being and food security of the department.
Santander, recognized for its diversity of ecosystems, thermal floors and agricultural vocation, faces both opportunities and challenges in terms of sustainable food production, soil conservation and access to healthy food. The diagnosis of food systems, prepared by the University of Santander (UDES) and the FOLU Coalition (Food and Land Use Coalition), served as a fundamental input to build this roadmap.
During the event, the strategic document that will guide the food transformation process with a vision for 2035 was officially presented. The proposal includes priority actions in the sectors of agriculture, environment, health, economy, education, and science and technology, integrating institutional efforts through the Unified Action Strategy.
Governor Díaz Mateus highlighted that “Santander has the tools to position itself as a national leader in food systems, in harmony with the Sustainable Development Goals and the country’s commitments in biodiversity and climate change”.
The participation of the School of Nutrition and Dietetics of the UIS strengthens this process, providing essential technical and academic knowledge to advance in the design of inclusive and effective food policies that improve the quality of life of all Santander citizens.
