International Epilepsy Day: towards a more inclusive society

The Specialized Health Unit of the Universidad Industrial de Santander (UISALUD) joins the commemoration of the International Epilepsy Day, highlighting the importance of early identification of the signs and symptoms of this disease through comprehensive health care routes.

Epilepsy is characterized mainly by recurrent seizures, caused by abnormal electrical discharges in the brain. These seizures can vary in intensity and affect consciousness, mobility and other bodily functions, hindering the quality of life of those who suffer from it.

According to the Colombian Ministry of Health and Social Protection, around 50 million people live with epilepsy in the world. In the country, 174,377 people were treated for this cause in 2021.

What is most encouraging is that 70% of patients with epilepsy could live without seizures if they receive adequate treatment. Hence the importance of access to antiepileptic drugs, timely primary care and specialized treatments to improve the quality of life of those suffering from this condition.

In terms of prevention, although it is not always possible to avoid epilepsy, some strategies can reduce its incidence, such as preventing head trauma, adequate perinatal care, and control of infections that affect the brain.

Beyond the medical challenges, patients with epilepsy face social barriers and discrimination, which affect their emotional well-being and social integration.

UISALUD reiterates its commitment to education and awareness of this disease, encouraging the promotion of healthy lifestyle habits and facilitating access to prevention programs and comprehensive care for its entire user population.
