Through education, Sede UIS Malaga participates in Territorial Meeting on the preservation of the Almorzadero Paramo

Professor Diego Suescún of the UIS Malaga Campus in the Forestry Engineering program participated in the “Territorial Meeting: Transformations of the Curriculum in the Key of Integral Education from the Care of Life and the Preservation of the Almorzadero Paramo Ecosystem”, organized by the Ministry of Education.

In the municipality of Cerrito, in the province of García Rovira, representatives of the educational sector, environmental institutions of the country and peasant organizations, who participate in the event led by the Ministry of National Education, entitled “Territorial Meeting: Transformations of the Curriculum in the Key of Integral Formation from the Care of Life and the Preservation of the Páramo del Almorzadero Ecosystem”. The objective of this meeting is to continue promoting the preservation of this valuable ecosystem through education.

The coordinator of Universidad Industrial de Santander, Sede Málaga, Deicy Dalila Delgado Diaz, together with the forestry engineer and professor, Diego Suescún, are present at this event, standing out as speakers and moderators at the working tables related to formal education and the CIDEA-Interinstitutional Committee for Environmental Education.

The Coordinator of the UIS Malaga Campus, Deicy Delgado, participated in the working group on formal education and the CIDEA-Interinstitutional Committee on Environmental Education.

“Participating in these spaces allows us to interact with the different actors that are part of the social fabric to co-construct concrete actions for the conservation of the Almorzadero Paramo.  It is worth mentioning that on this occasion we were invited to be part of the panel of the contextualization of the problem, and it is due to the presence of the UIS through research and extension projects that have been leading in recent years in the region, oriented towards the protection of species of flora and fauna such as the frailejones and the condor of the paramo” said the Coordinator of the UIS Malaga, Deicy Delgado.

Professor Diego Suescún, who participated in the panel on “Problems and alternatives of the El Almorzadero Paramo” pointed out that there is a lack of coordination between the territorial entities and the actors of the territory, as well as phenomena such as climate change, the lack of environmental awareness and the extension of the agricultural and livestock frontier that affect this type of ecosystems.

Participants in the event led by the national government through the Ministry of Education.

“In the framework of the panel we also highlighted that, in the face of this scenario, from the UIS we have been working on research projects analyzing soil erosion and how it is contaminated when we change the coverage to crops and pastures. Likewise, we highlight the work of the professors of Zootechnics who are implementing pasture management for high mountain pastures to ensure sustainable livestock. The Academy has also conducted research on Condor and restoration issues, among other topics.

The event, which began on Tuesday, October 1 and ends this Thursday, brings together more than 100 people, including rectors, teachers, members of the Board of Directors, student representatives, quality leaders from Santander and Norte de Santander, environmental education leaders from Santander and Norte de Santander, representatives of the CARs of Bucaramanga and Norte de Santander, the Von Humboldt Institute and environmental organizations from civil society.

For the representatives of the Ministry of National Education, these events also seek to identify multiple citizen voices, sociocultural, ecological, pedagogical and curricular elements that contribute to updating the curriculum and the PEI in terms of comprehensive education, with emphasis on the care of life from environmental education and action andthe promotion of peasant lifestyles.

The research projects being carried out by the UIS for the preservation of the Almorzadero páramo are highlighted.
