Seven golds, six silvers and 23 bronzes was the final balance of the Universidad Industrial de Santander in the National University Games Ascún, surpassing what was done the previous year in Bogota, where six golds and 22 medals were obtained.
“The UIS was present with 15 sports and 135 athletes. The balance was very positive, it is true that not everything is a triumph, but we surpassed the number of medals and especially the golds, which is the positioning at the national level. There were 135 participating institutions and more than 5,400 athletes in total,” informed Fabio Villafrades González, director of the Department of Physical Education and Sports.
The Karate Do Team was the most outstanding after winning five golds, three silvers and eleven bronzes for a total of 19 medals.
“The balance is more than positive, the kids have been very disciplined, they have been training since last year. For us to represent the UIS is the most beautiful thing there is, to be on the podium is very satisfying,” said Juan José Landinez Cruz, coach of the Karate Do Team.
Taekwondo was another of the outstanding selections with six medals, including two ‘golds’, in addition to a silver and three bronzes.
“It was my last Ascún, I am very happy because this was my dream, to represent the UIS and my goal was to be a medalist, so to see that I achieved it is a sigh,” said Sara Sofía Santos Quijano, gold medalist of the Taekwondo team.
In these Nationals, the UIS was again represented in Weightlifting after more than 15 years and thanks to Johan Lemus, student of Philosophy, there was a presence on the podium with a silver and two bronzes.
“I feel very happy to have represented the University, three medals were achieved and I hope to return soon. I am grateful for Professor Jova, he was very attentive and attentive throughout the process,” said Lemus.
Salomón Pinto and Juan José Marín won third place in squash doubles, a discipline in which the University participated for the first time. Judo, Swimming and Table Tennis were the other sports that won medals for the UIS in the Eje Cafetero.
In the general classification, the UIS placed in the top 20. The leader was the University of Antioquia with more than 30 golds and 107 medals in total.
At the Santander level, UIS was the one that won the most medals, but it was surpassed by the University of Santander (Udes), which won nine gold medals.
