A total of 371 students from fourth to eleventh grade took part in the different events of the 26th UIS Mathematical Calendar Gathering, an initiative that brought together 73 schools and connected children and young people from different parts of the department through mathematics.
The gatherings were organized according to different school levels and included 157 students from fourth and fifth grade, 125 from sixth and seventh grade, 47 from eighth and ninth grade, and 42 from tenth and eleventh grade.
These academic activities involved educational institutions from municipalities such as San Martín, Cesar; El Playón; Barrancabermeja; Girón; Piedecuesta; Floridablanca; Bucaramanga; San Vicente de Chucurí; Puerto Wilches; La Paz; among other areas.
For this year’s edition, the Recreational Mathematics Education Research Group (EDUMAT) and the School of Mathematics offered a unique learning experience through the use of hands-on materials and digital technology. The Soma Club and the GeoGebra educational platform enabled students to explore spatial visualization, figure composition, and the development of strategies aimed at enhancing their mathematical skills and understanding of their surroundings.
An Initiative That Strengthens Mathematical Thinking
The UIS Mathematical Calendar gatherings seek to bring students closer to mathematics through activities that encourage them to take on challenges, formulate situations, and develop essential mathematical thinking skills.
These events also provide an opportunity to strengthen the University’s relationship with educational institutions by connecting students from different regions with initiatives developed by UIS.
“It is a very rewarding experience. I really enjoyed it because, in addition to allowing us to interact with other students from different schools, everything was a real personal challenge. The exercises required a great deal of analysis and interpretation, so the entire process was a challenge, from preparation to the day of the test. This initiative is an innovative way to learn mathematics,” says Isabela Prado Durán, a teacher and graduate of Colegio Luis Carlos Galán Sarmiento.
With this, a new edition comes to an end, bringing students together to share knowledge, solve challenges, and strengthen their interest in mathematics. The 27th edition will begin in May 2027.
