The UIS Socorro Headquarters joined in the commemoration of World Tourism Day, a date that, since 1970, when the statutes of the World Tourism Organization were approved, recalls the social, cultural, political, economic, and environmental importance of this sector.
This year’s theme, “Tourism and Sustainable Transformation,” highlights tourism as a driver of positive change, capable of boosting economies, strengthening social justice, and promoting environmental sustainability.
Administrators, teachers, students, and the community at large participated in a varied academic and cultural day. Professor Pedro Javier Ramírez Bohórquez presented the conference ‘Analysis of the transformation of architectural cultural heritage in the destination of El Socorro, Heritage Town of Colombia’, where he invited reflection on the importance of protecting historic centers as key elements in boosting tourism and transforming territories.

Professor Celmira Pereira Franco, coordinator of the Tourism program, highlighted the active participation of students in this commemoration: “They participated in everything from creating a video about Colombia’s natural and cultural wealth, promoting indigenous games, and organizing exhibitions on the sustainable transformation of heritage, to handing out flags as a symbol of unity and commitment to society. Each semester, they contributed proposals that integrated academia with culture, heritage, and a sense of belonging.”
Sandra Howard, Executive Director of Grupo Tribu, joined the celebration by sending a message of tourism transcendence and sustainable transformation: “It is a call to pursue tourism that transforms travelers, provides unforgettable experiences, impacts communities, and protects the environment. I invite you to reflect on the impact of our decisions and actions as tourists, industry professionals, citizens, and community members, so that we can contribute to this transformation for our benefit and that of future generations. Let’s continue to make sustainability the best way to do tourism and bring benefits to all.”
The day ended with a folkloric show, a vivid expression of Colombia’s cultural diversity, reminding us that tourism is not just about traveling, but also about experiencing and transforming.
