Three professors from the Industrial University of Santander (UIS) served as speakers at the Symposium on Cardiovascular and Metabolic Risk, organized by the ESE Santander University Hospital, the UIS’s primary teaching hospital.

The Department of Internal Medicine at the School of Medicine reaffirmed its commitment to education, scientific updates, and university outreach through its participation in the Symposium on Cardiovascular and Metabolic Risk, an academic event organized by the ESE Hospital Universitario de Santander that brought together nearly 600 attendees in a hybrid format.

The UIS was represented by three distinguished professors from the Department of Internal Medicine, who shared their knowledge and experiences regarding some of the major current challenges in the prevention and care of cardiovascular and metabolic diseases.

Dr. Lady Rodríguez Burbano, a specialist in internal medicine, endocrinologist, and director of the Department of Internal Medicine, opened the university’s participation by presenting the lecture “Redefining Obesity,” addressing a condition that poses one of the greatest challenges to public health and requires comprehensive approaches for its prevention and management.

Next, Dr. Sergio Andrés Higuera Leal, a specialist in internal medicine, cardiology, and epidemiology, presented the lecture “A Practical Approach to Dyslipidemia,” offering insights to improve the identification and management of lipid abnormalities as cardiovascular risk factors.

Dr. Boris Eduardo Vesga Angarita, a specialist in internal medicine, a cardiologist, and a hemodynamicist—as well as the coordinator of the graduate program in Internal Medicine—concluded the UIS’s participation with the lecture “Screening for Coronary Artery Disease in Asymptomatic Patients,” which addressed key aspects for the timely identification of coronary artery disease risk.

A Partnership That Strengthens Healthcare

The participation of UIS faculty members in this academic event demonstrates the Department of Internal Medicine’s commitment to outreach, knowledge transfer, and strengthening ties with the ESE Hospital Universitario de Santander, the university’s primary clinical training center.

Such events help strengthen the relationship between academia and health services, promoting the ongoing professional development of healthcare professionals and the development of knowledge that contributes to meeting the region’s health needs.

Through its participation in initiatives of this nature, the UIS continues to build on its contribution to professional training, the generation and dissemination of knowledge, and the strengthening of health care, reaffirming its commitment to the well-being of the community.
