To date, approximately 1,200 meters of excavation and 300 meters of cyclopean concrete have been completed, while the manufacturing of the metal panels that will form part of the structure is underway.
The Universidad Industrial de Santander continues to advance the improvement and upgrading works at its Málaga campus. Among the projects currently underway is the construction of the enclosure of the UIS Málaga campus, an infrastructure project that will help define the campus boundaries and strengthen its physical conditions.
According to contractor engineer Wilfer Padilla, the enclosure project consists of four main phases that are being carried out sequentially.
The first stage involves the excavation required to establish the cyclopean concrete foundation, with approximate dimensions of 70 centimeters in width and 20 centimeters in height. A structural wall approximately 70 centimeters high and 50 centimeters wide will subsequently be built on this foundation.
Regarding the progress of the work, the contractor explained that approximately 1,200 meters of excavation have already been completed, with around 150 meters still pending.
These pending works are related, among other aspects, to the assessment of several mature trees located within the intervention area. According to Padilla, the corresponding procedures are currently underway to determine the necessary actions regarding these trees and allow excavation activities to continue.
At the same time, construction of the cyclopean concrete platform is progressing. To date, approximately 300 meters have been poured, while work teams continue carrying out activities at different points of the project.
Next Phase: Construction of the Structural Wall
The project is also moving into a new stage with the arrival of materials such as reinforcing steel, which will be used to assemble the structures that will be incorporated into the wall.
According to the contractor’s projected schedule, the pouring of the structural wall will begin in the coming days. This phase will allow for gradual progress toward the installation of the metal elements that will complete the enclosure.
The work includes the fabrication of steel reinforcement cages that will be incorporated into the wall to ensure the structural specifications established for the project.
Three-Meter-High Metal Panels
One of the most visible elements of the new enclosure will be the triangular metal panels that will be installed on top of the wall.
These panels are currently being manufactured simultaneously in two workshops located in Bucaramanga and will be approximately three meters high.
The structure will use welded wire mesh with 15-by-15-centimeter openings and an approximate wire diameter of 8.5 millimeters.
According to the project schedule, once the structural wall pouring progresses and the manufactured panels become available, it is projected that within approximately 8 to 10 days, the first panels could begin to be installed at the UIS Málaga campus.
