This April 2, the Universidad Industrial de Santander (UIS) joins the commemoration of World Autism Awareness Day with a day of activities aimed at sensitizing the university community about this condition.

The activities will begin at the central campus, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 m. stands will be set up between the Library and the School of Mechanical Engineering building. In the afternoon, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., the day will move to the UIS Floridablanca campus and the Scientific Complex for Research in Health and Life Sciences (Faculty of Health).

A commitment to inclusion

“The UIS, through its inclusion program “Somos Todos” (We Are All), welcomes students with disabilities, today the university has 61 students with diverse functional abilities, among which 24 belong to the autism spectrum and are enrolled in different programs, hence the relevance of these days”, said Liliana Moreno Solano, coordinator of the Integral Services of Health and Psychosocial Development of Student Welfare.

The commemoration is possible thanks to the articulation between dependencies, promoting spaces for information, learning and awareness about autism.

“We have joined together to carry out this day, with the aim of making the entire university community know what autism is, the different ways of relating to each other, promoting equitable spaces, focused on maintaining a safer and more inclusive society,” added Moreno Solano.

Autism in figures

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 1 out of every 100 children in the world has autism. Although its characteristics can be detected in early childhood, in many cases the diagnosis is made years later.

With this initiative, the UIS reaffirms its commitment to inclusion and the construction of a more empathetic and equitable society.
