Learn about the challenges of fungal infections in felines and the risk of transmission to humans!

Stefany Lozada Alvarado, Bacteriologist and Clinical Laboratorian of the Universidad Industrial de Santander. Microbiologist and Clinical Chemist from the University of Costa Rica. Master in Microbiology with emphasis in Medical Mycology from the University of Costa Rica. Coordinator of the medical mycology section of the Clinical Laboratory and Blood Bank of the University of Costa Rica. Currently, teacher and researcher of the postgraduate Specialty in Medical Mycology of the Faculty of Microbiology of the University of Costa Rica, will be the next guest to address a topic of general interest in the Faculty of Health.

In this space for dialogue, the challenges that humans have when they are in contact with felines and can acquire fungal infections will be discussed.

There is a type of fungal infection that is traditionally acquired by traumatic inoculation of the skin. However, one species in particular evolved and developed the ability to transmit from cats to humans, with only the secretion produced by the felines. This jump between hosts makes relevant the study of the infection and the constant monitoring of the species circulating in a region to avoid outbreaks.
