The 33rd edition of Colombia’s most prominent university sports competition came to an end after two weeks of athletic events in Medellín. The Industrial University of Santander (UIS) stood out by securing 10th place overall and becoming the second university in the department of Santander with the highest number of medals in the overall standings.
179 UIS representatives concluded their participation with a total of 42 medals: 9 gold, 15 silver, and 18 bronze. The athletes competed across 13 sports disciplines, including individual and team events.
Combat sports, including taekwondo, karate, and judo (31), once again stood out as the disciplines that contributed the most medals to the university. These achievements were complemented by historic results in new disciplines, as UIS won silver medals in weightlifting and ultimate frisbee for the first time.
UIS Results at the ASCUN University Games
In 2025, the university earned a total of 47 medals: 10 gold, 11 silver, and 26 bronze. These results were achieved when UIS hosted the national stage of the competition. Although the university did not surpass its previous medal tally in the 2026 edition, it delivered a strong performance in Medellín, in the department of Antioquia.
Jorge Enrique Buitrago Espitia, director of the Department of Physical Education and Sports, expressed his gratitude to the university’s leadership: “I have nothing but words of gratitude for the leadership’s support, planning, and execution, which turned into a dream come true for hundreds of athletes who represented the university at the ASCUN National University Games.”
“Although we did not win the gold medal, we made history in our discipline. The team is very happy with the silver medal at the National Games. Of course, we are grateful to UIS for allowing us to make this dream come true; we will strive for more,” said Sebastián Arcón, a member of the university’s ultimate frisbee team.
The Colombian Association of Universities (ASCUN) has already confirmed Montería, Córdoba, as the next host city for the regional stage. In the coming weeks, the association is expected to officially announce the venue for the 24th edition of the 2027 ASCUN National University Games.
