Remember the ceiba trees that, a couple of weeks ago, forestry engineering students from the Industrial University of Santander – Málaga Campus germinated in the university nursery? Well, they have now been planted in the municipality of Capitanejo, in the village of Platanal in the province of García Rovira, reaffirming the UIS’s commitment to environmental conservation.
As part of the course “Nurseries and Forest Plantations,” taught by Professor Cristian Molina, forestry engineering students led the planting day. During the activity, 48 ceiba barrigona trees were planted, an endemic species of great ecological and cultural value in the Chicamocha region.
“The land was provided by Mr. Eliecer Coronado, who also joined the initiative by installing an irrigation system and carrying out cleaning work to ensure the survival of the trees in their early stages,” said Professor Molina.
The commitment of student Gloria Elizabeth Medina, who is responsible for tracking and monitoring the seedlings, is also noteworthy, demonstrating an exemplary role in ecological restoration and the protection of this species.
This project not only represents concrete action against environmental degradation, but also strengthens students’ practical learning, encourages collaborative work, and links the rural community with conservation processes.
As part of the program’s expansion, 40 additional ceiba barrigona trees are expected to be planted in the municipality of San Andrés, broadening the scope of this important conservation initiative.
