UIS Team Travels to China to Explore the Digital Transformation Processes of Leading Universities

A UIS team, composed of engineers Gilberto Díaz, Edgar Mesa, and Robinson Delgado, representing the Office of the President and the Directorate of Information and Communication Technologies (DTIC), traveled to China to gain firsthand knowledge of the digital transformation processes at some Chinese universities, with a focus on networking and cybersecurity.

As part of their agenda, the UIS team visited Huawei’s Shenzhen headquarters and its cutting-edge Research and Innovation Centers, accompanied by engineers Xiaochun Wi and Li Yang. During the visit, they explored Huawei’s ICT solutions and educational showrooms.

The team observed a demonstration of real-time solutions designed to support the educational process through a centralized platform for managing security, asset handling, geolocation, alarm systems, access control, and more across various university campuses.

Additionally, they were introduced to advancements in videoconferencing, connectivity (traditional and GPON), data centers, and storage solutions. The engineers also learned about Huawei Academy, the potential for global collaboration in research and development, and details of training programs for students and faculty.

During their tour of Shenzhen, the team visited Huawei’s Research and Development campus in Dongguan, home to 23 laboratories dedicated to emerging technologies. This campus is notable for its architecture, which draws inspiration from some of the most iconic European universities.

In Tianjin, the team held a meeting with Dr. Zhan Ling and Dr. Liu Wenwei at the Office of International Cooperation. Discussions centered around opportunities for collaboration and student exchange programs. They also visited the main data center, which serves as the central hub for all public universities in China, and were shown advanced technologies developed by Huawei to support digital transformation.

In Beijing, they visited Huawei’s Research and Development Center. The visit aimed to explore models for applying the latest technologies and networks to support hybrid education, as well as trends in healthcare, transportation, mining, and other sectors, while strengthening international collaboration ties.

This weekend, the team’s journey will continue as they gather valuable insights that could be applied at UIS to advance its digital transformation efforts.
