UIS professors shine at international symposium on safety and environmental protection

Professors from the Universidad Industrial de Santander (UIS) proudly represented the institution at the 1st International Symposium “Security and Environmental Protection for Life”, organized by the National Police at the main campus of the Universidad Autónoma de Bucaramanga. The papers presented were the result of years of academic research, with an interdisciplinary approach committed to sustainable development.

Professor Walter Pardavé, attached to the School of Metallurgical Engineering and Materials Science, shared an innovative strategy to mitigate environmental impact by manufacturing construction materials from industrial waste.

“The work presented consists of the research and design of a pilot plant for the manufacture of industrial materials. It is an interdisciplinary process in which several thesis students have participated, and which involves identifying the value of certain wastes, separating them according to their properties and transforming them into useful inputs to manufacture bricks or tread plates,” explained Pardavé.

Professor David Sanín, from the School of Biology, presented the advances in the UIS Herbarium and made an urgent call to protect the biodiversity of the department of Santander, affected by the lack of knowledge and environmental awareness.

“We presented a project that we have been developing for two years, focused on consolidating the knowledge of the flora of Santander. We have described endemic genera of the department and reported species that had not been recorded before in Colombia,” said Sanín.

The organization of the event highlighted the quality and relevance of the interventions of the UIS professors, who provided scientific knowledge and innovative solutions to environmental challenges.

“The presentations were very well structured, with solid scientific and technological studies. The experiences shared by UIS researchers are a great contribution to environmental protection,” said Lieutenant Colonel Ruby Pinzón, from the National Police.

The event will continue tomorrow with the participation of Professor Hans García, from the School of Electrical, Electronic and Telecommunications Engineering, who will be a panelist in the thematic forum “Application of new sustainable technologies in the face of climate change (social, economic and environmental)”.
