The creation of a specialized master’s degree that addresses the new lines of research in Artificial Intelligence and trends in Language Technologies (LT), integrating not only the academic vision but also industrial and social needs, was the main challenge taken on by four institutions with extensive experience in these areas, the University of Alicante in Spain, the Hellenic International University in Greece, the Industrial University of Santander in Colombia, and the University of Havana in Cuba.
The recent strategies of the European Union, the training needs identified, and the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations, the impact of Language Technologies (LT) and the major linguistic models, were the fundamental reasons for identifying the need to train professionals in skills and competencies to solve real problems of society and companies.
The purpose of the meeting held by the participating institutions was to set out the work objectives for the year 2025. Defining the curriculum, the coordination model, the prospective, the linkage of the program with the current offer of master’s degrees, and the sustainability of the program, were some of the issues addressed. Another future commitment will be to define the access requirements, the system of collaboration between all the partners and the homologation of the degree in the different countries.
The institutions seek to offer a comprehensive and multidisciplinary curriculum covering fundamental cutting-edge topics in linguistic technologies, generative Artificial Intelligence, large linguistic models, large corpora and data lakes. Students who will be part of this joint learning experience will be trained to become experts fit for the current technological revolution in the generation of large linguistic models and artificial intelligence.
The program coordinated by the University of Alicante and funded by Erasmus Mundus will be offered from 2026, will have a load of 90 credits and will be developed in three semesters. The first semester will take place in Alicante; the third semester in Greece; and the second semester, depending on the specialization path chosen by the students: in Cuba, the research path; and in Colombia, if they opt for the corporate innovation and industry application path.
The program is aimed at professionals in the fields of computer science and other engineering, philology, mathematics and physics, as well as graduates in the areas of linguistics or economics, and professionals with experience in the sector.
