Between late October and early November, Bucaramanga will host the National University Games Ascún 2025 and the UIS will be one of the scenarios in which some disciplines will be disputed.
This will be the 32nd edition of the most important sports competitions of university sports, which will be held again in the capital of Santander after 15 years.
“The headquarters of the Ascún Nationals has a rotation for each of the six nodes and this year it is the turn of the East Node, so from the organization Bucaramanga was chosen as the venue. This is how we are working among the higher education institutions of the city and the region for the logistics of the games. There will be more than five thousand athletes, in addition to the people accompanying the delegations,” said Fabio Villafrades González, director of the Department of Physical Education and Sports UIS.
The qualification process for the Nationals will begin in two weeks with the Zonal Phase, in which UIS athletes will compete against members of other universities in Bucaramanga and its metropolitan area.
Those who qualify will go on to the Regional Phase, which will be held in Tunja during May and will have the participation of institutions from Santander, Norte de Santander, Boyacá, Casanare and Meta; from there, the best will go on to the National Phase in Bucaramanga.
For this year, the goal of the UIS is to surpass the 35 medals obtained in 2024 in Pereira and Armenia. There the balance was seven golds, six silvers and 22 bronzes, achieved in the disciplines of karate do, taekwondo, weightlifting, judo, swimming, squash and table tennis.
On that occasion, the delegation was made up of 135 athletes and was ranked 15th in the general medal list among more than 115 institutions of higher education in Colombia.
