In order to include the community of Páramo de Berlín in a radio astronomy program and promote the development of the radio observatory in the region, members of the Control, Electronics, Modeling and Simulation Research Group (Cemos) of the UIS visited the Lizcano Flórez School, located in the village of Vega Grande in the town of El Paujil in Matanza.
There, there were scientific talks related to astronomy and radio astronomy, the socialization of the projects developed by the group and the realization of practical activities with educational kits designed specifically for this initiative.
One of the tasks carried out was the installation of a two-meter antenna in the school’s field. There, the team installed the antenna feeder system and performed the necessary tests to ensure its correct operation, verifying the reception of signals and confirming that it was operational.
At the same time, the operation of a radio telescope was explained, as well as the process of capturing data in real time, highlighting the importance of the 1420 MHz frequency, which corresponds to the emission of neutral hydrogen, and how this type of observations is key in the field of radio astronomy.
A comparison was also made between the operation of the installed antenna and the portable antenna, explaining the differences in signal reception.
During the conference there was space for talks with teachers and members of Cemos, who shared their knowledge with the children in order to motivate them to learn and explore the world of radio astronomy, promoting an educational approach that encourages the development of scientific and technological skills from a practical and attractive perspective.
The mission of the Cemos Group is the active participation in research processes involving the training of researchers with high ethical and professional quality, and the generation of knowledge.
Each of these components are oriented to contribute to the progress and improvement of the quality of life of the community and the country from an interdisciplinary perspective, through the generation and appropriation of knowledge in the areas of electricity and electronics.
