The commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the existence of the Civil Engineering program at the Universidad Industrial de Santander (UIS) was held with a special program.
The agenda included activities to celebrate the past, but also with a look to the future, with the commitment to continue being leaders in the training of civil engineers who contribute to the sustainable development of Colombia and the world.
“We are very proud of the program, they are 60 years in which more than 5,000 professionals have graduated, we have five master’s programs and soon our doctorate will be created. These years we have seen the progress, history and future prospects of the School, it is an important moment to celebrate the contributions made to the UIS and society,” explained Isabel Cristina Dominguez, professor of the School of Civil Engineering.
On Friday, the panel ‘Needs, potentials and challenges for the development of infrastructure in Santander’ was held, with the participation of Carlos Bueno, Alexandra Castellanos, Ana Joya and Rafael Marín, experts and distinguished graduates of Civil Engineering.
“The participation is satisfactory because for us it is important to achieve cohesion among the academic community of the program as students, professors, administrators, alumni, and this event brings us together around the pride towards the School,” Dominguez added.
The Civil Engineering program has been recognized on multiple occasions for its academic quality. It has received accreditations from the National Accreditation Council and the Ministry of National Education, in addition to obtaining the prestigious international accreditation ABET (Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology) in 2021, guaranteeing that its training meets the highest global standards.
“I am a civil engineer from the UIS, I graduated in 1977 and I am excited to be in my university, my faculty, to walk around the campus that has advanced in an extraordinary way and to see that the program has advanced in an important way, close to modern technologies and to produce engineers for today’s world and the future”, said Rafael Marín Valencia, president of the construction company Marval and an illustrious graduate of the program.
Throughout its history, the School has stood out for its focus on research and technological innovation, supported by its three research groups: Water Resources and Environmental Sanitation (GPH), Construction Materials and Structures (INME), and Systems Optimization (GEOMATIC). These groups have promoted cutting-edge projects in areas such as geotechnics, structural engineering and water resources management.
This Saturday the celebration will end with the ‘Civil Engineering Sports Festival’, which will be held at the UIS sports venues from 10 a.m. onwards.
