With the study of the leukemic index as a prognostic marker in Acute Coronary Syndrome, Jonathan Andrés Quintero Villamizar, a postgraduate student in Internal Medicine, presented a study entitled “Sociodemographic and clinical characteristics and complications in patients with a first acute coronary syndrome in Bucaramanga”, at the XIV International Symposium of Cardiology and Cardiovascular Surgery, held in Cartagena.
This study analyzed 115 patients with a first acute coronary syndrome in a third level hospital in Bucaramanga, Santander, with a 1 month follow-up. The majority were men, with elementary school education, in a free union and from an urban area.
The most common antecedents were hypertension and diabetes, and one third were smokers. More than half presented non-ST-elevation ACS and almost all were taken to catheterization, with findings of multivessel disease and reduced cardiac function.
The average hospitalization time was 5 days. The most frequent complications were arrhythmias such as atrial fibrillation and mitral valve insufficiency. Mortality in the first month of follow-up was 10%, reflecting the high risk of these patients.
This research was made possible thanks to the support of student mobility from the dean’s office of the Faculty of Health.
