Construction work began on the new building where the Institute of Languages will operate, which will have an expansion of close to 40% and will now have an area of approximately 7,000 square meters, in addition to having a basement, three levels, 40 classrooms and seismic-resistant standards for the proper and safe use of the university community.

“The building, called Instituto de Lenguas, has an approximate area of 4,800 square meters, its construction dates back to the 60’s and the new one will have 6,700 square meters. In this first phase, the old building will be demolished and the entire structure of the new one, which will have four levels, will be built,” said Iván Rojas Camargo, head of the Physical Plant Division.

As part of the project, the central cafeteria will be demolished at the end of the current academic period. This will be located on level zero of the new building and there will be a pedestrian walkway that will connect the Industrial Design building with the José Antonio Galán auditorium, better known as ‘La Gallera’.

The awarding of the public call process of the first phase has an order of 9,500 million pesos and an estimated time of three months was given to the contractor to perform such function.

“We have to be prepared from the date until the beginning of the second semester of 2025 to have the patience and confidence that this is a process that will have noise, discomfort, but as time goes by it will be less annoying and in the end we will have the goal of having one more building that meets the conditions required by those of us who live in our headquarters because building is very difficult, destroying is very easy,” said Hernán Porras Díaz, UIS rector.

During this period of time the administrative area of the Language Institute will operate on the second floor of the Mechanical Engineering building, the classrooms have been distributed in the other buildings of the central campus and in the first semester of 2025 the central cafeteria will serve on the eastern side of the Centic, i.e. at the back of the Library.
