The fourteenth edition of the International Physicists Tournament, one of the most important academic physics events in the world, will be held in Colombia and will be hosted by the Universidad Industrial de Santander (UIS), which will receive the best university physicists from 16 countries.

The students representing the UIS in this competition are: Ángela Sofía Barajas Ochoa, Juan Diego Figueroa Hernández, Juan Andrés Guarín Rojas, Gabriela Sánchez Ariza, José David Garavito Barragán and Brayan Rodolfo Barajas Ochoa.

Between Monday, May 9th and Saturday, May 14th, six representatives from each of the teams will face each other in the ‘Physics Fights’. The dynamics to select the winner is as follows:

In the first instance there will be a reporter: person in charge of providing a solution and exposing the problem, in a maximum time of 10 minutes.

An opponent: person in charge of explaining the weaknesses of the reporter and his solution, in a maximum time of 5 minutes. The opponent must engage in a debate to find a mutual solution with the reporter.

A reviewer: person in charge of reviewing the process of the reporter and the opponent to give their final grade.

Physics students from Brazil, Croatia, Denmark, France, Germany, India, Italy, Holland, Poland, Romania, Russia, Slovenia, Sweden, Switzerland, Great Britain, Ukraine and Colombia will participate in this international academic activity.

Luis Alberto Núñez, professor at the UIS School of Physics spoke about the importance of these tournaments. “When we measure ourselves against other Physics programs, nationally and internationally, and we come first, that is the external recognition to which we are very attentive. This time, we are hosting this international event, which allows us to project ourselves even more, as a region and as a country. A country grows when its capitals are not the only reference. This time, Santander will be Colombia and, as we know #SantanderSiempreAdelante”.

What is the International Physicists Tournament?

The International Physicists Tournament was born in Ukraine in 2009 as a continuation of a long tradition of physics competitions in the USSR. It brought together 16 teams from leading universities of Ukraine and neighboring countries.

The first two editions of the tournament were held at Kyiv University, and the third and fourth editions were held at the Moscow Institute of Technology in Russia.

In 2013, the tournament moved west to Switzerland, where the fifth and sixth editions were held at the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne. The tournament has remained in Europe for the following years. Over the years, more and more countries participated in this event. In 2018, the tournament brought together sixteen countries: Brazil, China, Colombia, Coatia, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, India, Italy, Poland, Russia, Slovenia, Sweden, Switzerland and Ukraine.
