Through various activities and mathematical games, the students of the Bachelor’s program in Mathematics and the STEAM+H seedbed celebrated this Friday, March 14, the International Mathematics Day with children of the Technical Educational Institution Damaso Zapata.

In 2019, Unesco declared every March 14 in honor of this science and thus give visibility to the international mathematical community, showing the celebrations from all geographical points how special the 14th day of the month 3 is, calling it as Pi Day.

The purpose of the activity proposed by the young people of the UIS was to inspire children from elementary school to explore and develop their skills in school mathematics. To this end, a circuit with various challenges was organized to allow participation, teamwork and problem solving of children with future teachers of Mathematics and Primary Basic Education.

The event was led by the Edumat research group, the School of Mathematics and its STEAM+H seed group, led by Professor Jenny Patricia Acevedo Rincón and its leaders Luisa María Díaz and Angy Pineda.

Likewise, this seedbed and its thesis students joined the celebration beyond the borders of Santander thanks to the work in the territory, as was the case of the Tapias Technical Educational Institution, located in a rural area of Ibagué. There, the commemoration of mathematics was carried out from an interdisciplinary perspective.

At the same time, the organization of the International Day of Mathematics -IDM enacted the Challenge: ‘Math You can touch’. This challenge consisted of using art and creativity to build mathematical sculptures from everyday physical objects, where students of Mathematics participated through the photograph of a human mandala, which was classified and published on the organizer’s website and therefore was visible worldwide.

The celebration of International Mathematics Day promotes a massive and diverse action in which institutions explore different perspectives through everyday situations.
